The Problem
Calls to 3rd parties via APIs suffer from the lack of proper security controls owing to the fact that the users of the APIs do not control the logic or code of the actual API code. 3rd party APIs that do not provide rate limiting, MFA can expose the users of the APIs to replay attacks.
